Search Engine Results Pages (SERP)

TL;DR

Search Engine Results Pages (SERP) are pages whose main purpose is to display results in response to a keyword query on search engines such as Google.

About Search Engine Results Pages (SERP)

SERP stands for Search Engine Results Pages and represents the web pages that display a list of results as an answer to a user’s query.
A SERP is composed of organic search results, query, ads, and in some cases additional features for each result, but these only apply to major search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo. SERP will display a list of personalized results depending on the user's location and preferences and the majority of these items on the list will contain:

  • The web page title
  • Link to the website
  • A short description

What are the SERP features?

The SERP features are the results shown on a search engine that are not traditional organic results, they have an extra component such as an image or an additional panel.

Some examples are:

  • Rich snippets which add a visual layer to an existing result (ex. review stars, food recipes, event details, a news article)
  • Paid ads on specific keywords (ex. Shopping items)
  • Knowledge graphs are shown in the form of panels or boxes (ex. weather box)
  • Universal results that appear in addition to organic results (ex. image results, featured snippets)
  • These are all the types of SERP features from Google:  Adwords, Videos, Reviews, Featured Snippet, Image Pack, In-Depth Article, News Box, Knowledge Card, Knowledge Panel, Local Pack, Local Teaser Pack, Reviews, Shopping Results, Site Links, Tweets.

Why is SERP important?

SERP is important as it allows users to find the best options or answers to what they are searching for on the Internet. They can choose to access the preferred information from multiple websites, all shown to them depending on their geolocation and previous preferences.
